When I was in first year I used to look up to the seniors and I used to think that things would progress naturally. I used to think I’ll gain their skills, intelligence, confidence, whatever when I’ll be in their year. Now being in fifth year, things do not look that way, in many aspects I’ve learned a lot, grown a lot, but in other aspects I feel I’m as clueless as I was before. I realized that we don’t grow because years pass by but because we go through events and experience which makes us to grow. Some of them necessarily happen because years pass by, like exams, compulsory internship, placements, but most of the experiences you need to have, aren’t scheduled. Hence, you have to work make them happen.

To give some crude examples, if you think you’ll have the confidence of speak in public by fifth year, you probably won’t have that confidence if actually go and speak in public. If you think you’ll make good relationship with your professors, that won’t happen unless actually go and try to talk to them. If there are certain things you are hoping to see changed, they probably won’t change unless you actually work on them.
